For most students, summer vacation usually means time for rest, trips to the beach and fun parties - but not for some of our H-IS students who decided to take advantage of the break to make some serious considerations about what their future may hold (Attend university? Where? What should I major in?).
In September, Virginia will begin her DP journey at the International School of Talents - Multicampus.
«This summer, I attended a summer course at Bocconi University in Milan. It consisted of studying a course each week that we had to apply for, from which I was selected and chose Fashion&Luxury and Finance labs. I chose Fashion&Luxury only so I would be sure that it was definitely the path I want to take for my academic career. But what was comforting and in some ways encouraging was the praise I received by the professor and top managers of an Italian retail brand on the presentation we had to give at the end of the week. But what was most promising was the way I managed to achieve the same level of validation from my Finance professor. Despite not being familiar with the topics of the course, I managed to use the knowledge we gather every day at H-FARM on businesses in the real world and apply that to understand more complex financial systems and markets».
Alex,a future DP2 student at the International School of Talents - Multicampus, spent a month at the Turin headquarters of CELI, an H-FARM company that deals with artificial intelligence and Language Technology. Alex told us: «I’m working on a model that will be able to find images within a dataset that best match a user’s description. This is a major problem for search engines like Google images that rely on textual support; we want to be able to find images without additional text. An algorithm of this kind could be used by stock photos sites or for social media monitoring». Andrea Bolioli, director of R&D for CELI and Alex’s tutor said: «This was the first time that we worked on AI research topics with a high school student: it was an extraordinary and extremely positive experience. To see a young student who was able to effectively collaborate with an AI scientist opened up many interesting perspectives. Past experiences that we have had with interns and university student have always been very positive, but in this case, I would have never imagined we would have had such excellent results. We would like to thank the H-International School coordinator, Mauro Bordignon, our AI scientist Giampiero and, especially, to Alex for the contagious passion that he showed us!».
