Our most recent encounter in ignition lab was a lovely lady with curly locks and vibrant green eyes who met us and came straight to the point: only 2% of women are present in the gaming industry. The gaming industry, an industry worth billions all over the world has such a little amount of women in it. Why? Is it because girls can’t play? Because girls don’t know how to play? Or because girls don’t know they can play? Well, Lisa di Sevo is here to change that. The president of SheTech organization is a non-profit company that gives the possibility to anyone who is interested to deepen their soft and hard skills on subjects like robotics, technology, and informatics. Lisa has 15 years of working experience, a whole organization under her belt and two kids. Her company has three main branches: education, networking, and empowerment. For the education aspect there are camps people can attend where things like public speaking are taught in an accessible way for anyone. They even prepare you for Ted talks(“non profit devoted to spreading ideas in short talks”). For the Networking part, there are connections with important agencies like apple and Spotify so that the people who are interested can understand fully what technology is like; and for the empowerment, there are workshops being made that explain how to use Instagram and LinkedIn at your advantage. This is all made for people who did not have the opportunity to understand technology at an early age due to any circumstance, and this I believe is amazing.
Lisa di Sevo really gave us a message here. Showing how much her passion for technology sparked the idea for SheTech. As H-students we all know what it feels like to have ideas and plans, and some of us don’t always have the opportunity to follow such plans. It is important for us to understand what it feels like to have difficulties we might never encounter to become more mature and sharp minded. Because that is the only way any of our ideas will ever make a change. I believe Lisa di Sevo who studied languages in economics and then proceeded to the University of Columbia in America to study finance is a true inspiration for all of us. “Time is a limited resource,” she said, “use it wisely following your passion.”
In conclusion, we should all be aware of what it means to be a minority. In this world, things are changing fast and soon the people who were once privileged will not be anymore. Why? Because technology is connecting us, sharing information faster than we can blink, and the people who where once the smartest will become as smart as everyone else. Not because they are losing knowledge but because resources are reaching more people. And with equal resources comes equal possibilities which put together lead to more knowledge..
